What Junk Removal Companies Can't Take (And What To Do Instead)
Paint, chemicals, tires and more — the items every hauler has to refuse, plus exactly where San Antonio residents can drop them off for free.
Every junk removal company in Texas operates under the same disposal regulations, which means the refusal list is basically identical no matter who you call. Here's what nobody can take, and where it should actually go.
Household hazardous waste
Liquid paint, stain, motor oil, antifreeze, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals and cleaning chemicals all fall under household hazardous waste. Transfer stations won't accept them mixed into a load, and the fines for trying are significant.
San Antonio operates free household hazardous waste drop-off events and a permanent facility for residents. Bring proof of residency. It's genuinely free and takes about fifteen minutes.
One workaround: latex paint that has been fully dried out — mixed with kitty litter and left open until solid — is no longer hazardous and can go in a regular load.
Asbestos and lead materials
Popcorn ceilings, old floor tile, pipe insulation and siding in homes built before about 1985 can contain asbestos. No junk removal company can legally handle it. You need a licensed abatement contractor, and in most cases a test first.
If your hauler suspects asbestos mid-job, they'll stop. That isn't them being difficult — it's a criminal liability issue.
Medical and biohazard waste
Sharps, prescription medications, blood-contaminated materials and biological waste require licensed medical waste handling. Most San Antonio pharmacies and police stations accept unused prescriptions at take-back boxes.
Explosives and pressurized containers
Ammunition, fireworks, flares, propane tanks and oxygen cylinders are all refused. Propane tanks can usually be exchanged or returned at any hardware store or exchange cage. Ammunition can be surrendered to the San Antonio Police Department.
Items with special handling
Tires are accepted by most haulers but carry a per-tire fee because of state recycling requirements. Refrigerators and AC units can be taken, but the refrigerant must be reclaimed by a certified processor — which any legitimate company already does.
Large amounts of dirt, concrete or roofing are technically haulable but priced by weight, and some companies will decline very heavy loads that exceed truck axle limits.
The simplest rule
If it would poison, explode, burn or infect someone, it needs a specialty channel. Everything else, send us a photo and we'll tell you straight whether it's coming with us.
