How to Prepare for Your Junk Removal Pickup

4 min read

Five minutes of prep that gets the crew in and out faster — and occasionally lands you a smaller load size and a lower price.

You don't have to prepare at all — that's the whole point of hiring a crew. But a few small things speed the job up, and since pricing is based on volume and labor, faster sometimes means cheaper.

Flag what stays

The single most useful thing you can do. Painter's tape, sticky notes, or just a clearly separated corner. Crews work fast, and 'wait, not that one' is the most stressful sentence on any job site.

This matters most in garages, storage units and estate cleanouts where the keep pile and the go pile look identical to an outsider.

Sort out the hazardous stuff

Pull liquid paint, motor oil, solvents, pool chemicals and propane tanks aside before the crew arrives. They can't take them, and finding them mid-load slows everything down.

Think about parking

A junk truck needs about 30 feet of clearance and roughly 12 feet of height. If you're in a tight downtown street, a gated community or an apartment complex, sort out the access details when you book rather than when the truck is idling out front.

For apartments, check whether an elevator needs reserving.

Empty drawers and cabinets — sometimes

Dressers and filing cabinets are much easier to carry empty, and if the contents are also going, it doesn't matter. But if you're not sure what's in them, check first. Crews find cash, jewelry and documents in furniture more often than you'd guess.

Consolidate if it's easy

Moving items to the garage or driveway can occasionally drop the labor component of a quote. Don't hurt yourself doing it — carrying heavy things is literally what you're paying for. But if there are ten light boxes scattered across three rooms, stacking them helps.

Be reachable

Most crews text when they're en route. If the items are outside and accessible, many companies can complete the job and take payment without you being home at all — worth asking when you book.
